Canadian Education and Research in Mechanical Engineering
Jean W. Zu
With the increasing global competition and continued advancement in technology, the engineering field is facing unprecedented challenges and opportunities. Educators are at an important cross road on how to take the challenges and seize the opportunities to bring forth engineering education towards a well-rounded engineering education. All these challenges put higher demand on the training of well-rounded engineers and future leaders.
In this presentation, an overview of the Department of Mechanical & Industrial at University of Toronto is provided in undergraduate studies, graduate studies, and research.
The principal objective of the university education is to provide the intellectual foundation on which lifetime learning and successful careers can be built. In addition to technical skills learned in both undergraduate and graduate education, it has become more important than ever that students possess the following non-technical skills to become well-rounded:

Understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global and societal context.
      Participate in multidisciplinary teams.
Communicate effectively in an inter-disciplinary, international, and inter-cultural environment.
Engage in life-long learning and adaptation.
Understand various contemporary and social issues.
Possess leadership skills and visions for the future.

报告人简介:
Professor Jean W. Zu is currently Chair of the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, University of Toronto. Professor Zu joined the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering in 1994 after receiving her BSc and MSc degrees from Tsinghua University and her PhD from the University of Manitoba. She was promoted to Associate Professor in 1999 and to full Professor in 2004. From July 1, 2009, she serves as Chair of the Department.
As a prestigious international researcher in the field of vibration and dynamics, Dr. Zu’s main contributions have been in the modeling, analysis, and control of nonlinear vibration systems, particularly in applications of automotive, MEMS, and tissue engineering, etc. Dr. Zu is the founder and director of both theVibration and Computational Dynamics Laboratory and the Bio-Instrument and Biomechanics Laboratory at the University of Toronto. She has authored about 100 refereed journal papers and over 110 conference papers on these research areas.
Professor Zu is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS, 2007), the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME, 2006), the Engineering Institute of Canada (EIC, 2006), and the Canadian Society of Mechanical Engineering (CSME, 2001). She served as President of the CSME from 2006-2008, and served on the NSERC Grant Selection Committee from 2004-2007. Dr. Zu currently serves as the Associate Editor of the ASME Journal of Vibrations and Acoustics and is President-Elect of Engineering Institute of Canada (EIC).
