Abstract
Multi-scale manufacturing underpins the development of science and technology, and hence is the backbone of a nation’s economy. Research in multi-scale manufacturing is highly interdisciplinary, involving much of the fundamentals of, e.g., mechanics, manufacturing and characterisation. This presentation will introduce some research activities in this area at the Laboratory for Multi-scale Manufacturing, the University of New South Wales, Australia. The talk will consist of two parts which are (i) an overview on some of the Laboratory’s research outcomes/activities in both fundamentals and direct industrial applications, and (ii) a case study detailing the investigation and invention using the characterisation of phase transformations of silicon as an example.

About the Speaker
章亮炽现为澳大利亚工程院院士、新南威尔士大学杰出教授(Scientia Professor)和终身教授、联邦研究院教授研究员。他的研究领域为纳米技术、多尺度表面加工技术、摩擦学和固体力学。章亮炽分别于1982和1985年获浙江大学理学学士和工学硕士学位。1988年获北京大学理学博士学位。1989至1991年为英国剑桥大学博士后。1991年任日本国立机械技术研究中心客座研究员(Guest Research Fellow)。 1992至2009年任教于悉尼大学。2005年获悉尼大学高等工学博士学位。2003至2007年任悉尼大学工程研究生院院长和工学部副部长。2005至2007年任澳大利亚联邦研究院专家委员会专家。2006年当选澳大利亚工程院院士。2007年起任澳大利亚政府“教育、科技和培训部”的国际项目专家评审委员会专家。2009年转任新南威尔士大学杰出教授。章亮炽已发表四部学术专著，四百余篇学术论文，并拥有六项技术专利。他是十余种国际杂志的主编、副主编、高级主编及名誉主编等。
