题目:Surface Measurement and Characterisation at Micro and Nanometre Scales

Professor Xianping Liu简介:

Dr Xianping Liu is Associate Professor in the School of Engineering of the University of Warwick. She received her BSc and MSc degrees from Harbin Institute of Technology (Harbin, P. R China) in 1982 and 1984 respectively. She was with the Warwick Centre for Nanotechnology and Microengineering from 1990 to 1995 as a research fellow and gained her PhD degree in 1995. Then she moved to a high-prestige University Research Fellowship at Coventry University (a post similar to a lectureship but giving more space to pursue independent research). She re-joined the Warwick University as lecturer in 2000 and was promoted to Senior Lecture in 2004. Her research interests are in precision engineering, nanometrology, surface measurement and characterisation, high precision sensors and actuators, and multi-function instrument design and development. She has published over 80 papers in refereed journals and conferences and one international patent. Over the past few years she has been leading research on the multi-function surface characterisation by developing a novel tribological probe microscope (TPM) for mapping surface properties at micro-nanometre scales. The TPM has won a prestigious award at the Metrology for World Class Manufacturing Awards in 2001, a major UK government sponsored research competition. This research work has since attracted a wide range of publicity, including reports from Financial Times (15 Nov. 2001), Professional Engineering (12 Dec. 2001), Materials Today (Jan., 2002), and a two-page article in Materials World (pp23-24 Feb. 2002). This has gained her wide international recognition and industrial collaboration with Alcan in Switzerland, Ford in the UK, and Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe in Germany.

Over the years, her research interests have been expanded to a wider area covering surface related property measurement and characterisation, affective engineering, human tribology, novel instrument design and development for touch-feel perception, and mechanics and materials for functional surfaces.

She has been playing a leading role in establishing international collaborations with several Chinese universities. The collaborations have attracted funding from Royal Society and Royal Academy of Engineering for Joint project (UK-China), UK-China Science Networks, KC Wong fellowship and the recent Exchange Award. She has been awarded Visiting Professorship to Harbin Institute of Technology and Tianjin University in China and also to the North Carolina University at Charlotte (UNCC) in the United States. She has been a member of the Peer Review College of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) since 2003, overseas panel member of Natural Science Funding Council of China (NSFC) since 2004, and Fellow of both Institute of Nanotechnology and Royal Microscopical Society.
