Dr. Zheng, born in Cixi, Zhejiang province, graduated from Agriculture Mechanical Engineering, Zhejiang Agriculture University 1982. After graduation, he entered first graduate program in Biomedical Engineering at Shanghai Second Medical University, obtained his Master in Medical Science in 1985. He studied Biomechanics and Rehabilitation of paraplegic patients, treated thousands of paraplegic patients with functional electrical stimulation, designed first generation of anatomic total knee implants clinically used in China while he was an assistant professor at College of Medicine, Shanghai Jiaotong University. He left China in 1989 to study Biomedical Engineering at University of Saskatchewan, Canada with a 5-year scholarship from the university, where he designed an internal fixation device for cervical spine, studied Biomechanics of Sacroiliac Joint and Low Back Pain, and obtained his M.Sc. in 1992 and Ph.D. in 1995. After graduation, he moved to the States and joined American Sports Medicine Institute. He joined Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation, University of Florida in 2004, and Department of Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Science at University of North Carolina, Charlotte in 2008. He received a clinical research award from Major League Baseball, and young investigator initiative award from US Bone and Joint Decade. He has published over 50 peer-reviewed papers, recognized as the eminent scientist of the year 2003, served as the editorial board member of American Journal of Orthopedics, and referrer for 15 journals. Dr. Zheng is a member of Orthopedic Research Society, American Society of Sports Medicine Fellowship, American Society of Biomechanics and 7 other professional societies. His research achievements have been publicized by national and local newspapers and magazines, such as ESPN and USA Today.

Biomechanics and Motion Analysis Applied to Sports

With increase of sports participation, more and more people suffer from sports injuries and their long-term consequences, such as the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear and posttraumatic osteoarthritis of the knee. In order to prevent injuries and their long-term consequences, we aim to understand injury mechanisms and any functional alteration following treatment and rehabilitation. This presentation covers three parts: human motion analysis, joint biomechanics and mechanical evaluation of surgical treatment. Pros and cons of several motion capture systems and their applications are discussed. Injury mechanisms of throwing activity are presented. The alteration in 3-D knee joint motion and loading following ACL reconstruction (i.e. risk factors for knee osteoarthritis) are compared with healthy controls. The current surgical techniques of ACL reconstruction and available grafts are also presented. In the end, we will discuss obstacles and challenges we are facing and future research directions in prevention and treatment of sports injuries.
