Abstract:

This seminar will focus on the application of a level set topology optimisation method to the concurrent design of multiscale cellular composites. Both the topologies of the microstructures and the macro host structure are optimised simultaneously. Benchmark examples are used demonstrate the effectiveness of the generative design method.

Short Bio:

Dr Zhen Luo is currently an associate professor at University of Technology Sydney (UTS), and the Director for the university research centre "Advanced Computational Design and Manufacturing". He received his PhD degree from Mechanical Engineering, HUST in 2005. After that, he worked as a research fellow at Chinese University of Hong Kong, University of Sydney, and University of New South Wales for 7 years. His research focuses on topological optimisation, design optimisation with sampling and surrogate models, uncertainty analysis-driven reliability and robust design optimisation, metamaterials, cellular/lattice composites, and multiscale modelling and design, as well as his recent interest in additive manufacturing for complex geometries. Zhen is the author for over 100 peer-reviewed journal papers, including 89 JCR-Q1 journal papers. His Scopus citations are up to 3000 times and Scopus h-index is 32. Dr Luo has received several competitive and industrial research grants, including ARC DP (Australian Research Council, Discovery Project), NSFC (National Natural Science Foundation of China) and AutoCRC (Australian Cooperative Research Centre for Advanced Automotive Technology). He has editorial roles for several international journals, including Structural and Multidisciplinary Optimisation. He has been the supervisor for 11 PhD students, with 8 successful completions.
