On the morning of May 21, Zhejiang University hosted a festive celebration dedicated to its 120th anniversary on Zijingang Stadium. It brought together leaders at various levels, distinguished guests from every corner of the world, presidents of more than 30 overseas universities and over 80 domestic universities, alumni as well as faculty and students from across Zhejiang University. Che Jun, Secretary of the Zhejiang Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China, and Zhu Zhiwen, Vice Minister of Education, attended and addressed the celebration.
Jin Deshui, Party Chief of Zhejiang University, presided over the celebration, and Wu Zhaohui, President of Zhejiang University, delivered a keynote speech.
Over the past 120 years, Zhejiang University has adhered to the motto of “seeking the truth and pursuing innovation”, fostered common values and cultivated its distinctive spirit. These precious spiritual assets are also an integral part of Zhejiang Spirit.
Che Jun extended his heartfelt congratulations on the 120th anniversary of Zhejiang University on behalf of the Zhejiang Provincial CPC Committee and the Zhejiang Provincial People’s Government. “By the Qiantang River in southeast China stands a prestigious university―Zhejiang University. In the past 120 years, It has unswervingly kept pace with the times and pioneered new trails. It has kept a foothold in Zhejiang and served Zhejiang. With the passage of time, it has evolved into a celebrated comprehensive, research-oriented and innovation-driven university and made tremendous contributions to the social and economic development of Zhejiang Province,” Che Jun said, “We have a greater need for obtaining appreciable scientific and talent support and adopting the strategies of strengthening the province via education and talents. The Zhejiang Provincial CPC Committee and the Zhejiang Provincial People’s Government will continue to render generous support to the development of Zhejiang University, thus creating more favorable conditions and providing better services to build a world-class university. I hope that Zhejiang University will take the 120th anniversary as a new starting point, grasp opportunities and forge ahead courageously so as to make new breakthroughs and go on to higher achievements.”
Zhu Zhiwen extended his cordial congratulations on behalf of the Ministry of Education. “Zhejiang University is steeped in history and culture. It has yielded fruitful achievements and displayed a rising trend in education,” Zhu Zhiwen said, “I hope that Zhejiang University will accelerate the construction of building a world-class university and promote service capacity in terms of the national and regional development. The Ministry of Education will lend its standing support to the reform of Zhejiang University and the building of a world-class university.”
Wu Zhaohui delivered a speech entitled “Seeking the truth, pursuing innovation, cultivating virtue and striving for excellence”. He gave an emotional review about the development of Zhejiang University in the past 120 years and depicted a rosy picture for its promising future. Wu Zhaohui pointed out that Zhejiang University should take a close look at the past and the future from a grander perspective. Under the leadership of the Central Government, the State Council, the Ministry of Education, the Zhejiang Provincial CPC Committee and the Zhejiang Provincial People’s Government, with the vigorous support of various circles, in accordance with the prospects of building a world-class university with Chinese characteristics, Zhejiang University will be committed to adopting the strategy of building a great university with “6 Highs”, promoting the construction of the “five systems” and the “five layouts”, and cultivating talents. We will strive to make more contributions to serving social development, rejuvenating China and promoting human progress. “I sincerely hope that Zhejiang University will hold onto the creed and dream of ‘seeking the truth and pursuing innovation’ and open a new chapter of glory and brilliance,” Wu Zhaohui said.
Other speakers included Lin Jianhua, President of Peking University, Robert Jones, Chancellor of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Ye Peijian, Chief Commander and Chief Designer of the Chinese Lunar Exploration Program，Chen Yunmin, a Fellow of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Lu Shuyang, a postgraduate student at the School of Public Affairs. They also expressed their best wishes to Zhejiang University.
