Speaker: Panos Y. Papalambros, a Professor of Engineering and a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Michigan.
Subject: Design Science and Optimization: Analysis-based Design of Products and Systems
Time: At 9:00-9:50, June 27th, 2011
Place: The meeting room on the fourth floor of the Mechanical and Electrical Building in Yuquan campus
Abstract
Design Science studies the creation and embedding of artifacts in our lives and the attendant consequences for users and society, integrating analysis techniques from the engineering, behavioral, and social sciences. This talk presents an analytical approach to product and system design based on the mathematical optimization paradigm, along with its implications for design research and teaching. A brief overview of the Design Science PhD Program at the University of Michigan and the current scope of the ASME Journal of Mechanical Design will be also offered.
