Current Research Trends in Heat Transfer, Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells and Fluid Dynamics

Abel Hernandez Guerrero, Ph.D.
Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering
University of Guanajuato
Salamanca, Guanajuato, Mexico

Abstract

Heat transfer is a phenomenon that is found in daily life (e.g. radiators in cars, fan heaters, heat sinks for chips, heat exchangers, cooling fans on PCs, among others). Heat transfer is observed too in high technology applications like the thermal aberration cause by overheating on the lens of immersion units. In this presentation, several interesting research topics involving the application of heat transfer will be presented, ranging from micro heat transfer, skin cancer treatment using heat transfer technics, heat transfer enhancement in heat sinks, heat transfer enhancement by means of an oscillating flow in a conical duct and a nanoscale calorimeter development. Moreover, also some developments for novel geometries for the bipolar plates in Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFC) will be discussed; PEMFCs are a clean energy power source option for vehicles and buildings. Finally, some important analysis on fluid dynamics will be presented, including but not limited to the numerical and experimental analysis of the aerodynamic sound generated during the vortices shock in a plane wing.

Biography
After he graduated with a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Oregon State University in 1991, he joined the Mechanical Engineering Department of the University of Guanajuato, Mexico as a full time professor; becoming the department head a year later. Dr. Hernandez then pursued a Post Doctorate at Texas A&M University from 1996 to 1998; developing a strong bond between Texas A&M University and University of Guanajuato by helping to establish the American Society of Mechanical Engineers Student Exchange Program between such institutions. Up to date, he is still a full time professor at the University of Guanajuato and has published more than 240 scientific papers in peer review journals and conferences. Dr. Hernandez has applied for seven patents, published 1 book, and edited or co-edited 9 proceedings of research publications. He is an associate editor of the ASME International Journal of Fuel Cell Technology and a member of the Editorial Boards of: The International Journal of Exergy, The International Journal of Energy Research, and The International Journal of Thermodynamics. His research areas are: Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFC), hydrogen technology, energy systems analysis, heat transfer analysis at micro level, thermal storage systems with phase change, energy saving, self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS), novel refrigerants analysis, combustion, and CFD.
